Astor Museum

Very convenient- right beside the British Museum; supermarket and Underground nearby...
Nice Staff. Big breakfast included. Rooms are large and spacious (at least in 10 bed mixed dorm). Good location: right beside the British Museum; supermarket and underground nearby; within walkable distance to Leicester Square/ Convent Garden....The neighborhood is safe and quiet also. ISIC cardholders are applicable to a 10% off discount .
But, the kitchen is a bit small with limited number of seats and there is not much space to explore and hang around within the hostel. Only a session of 40-minute free wifi is given to each guest in each stay. There are only 1-2 shared bathrooms in each floor (since there are only 1-2 rooms in each floor, it is not a big problem though~)
Astor's Museum Inn will be the place if you're looking for some not-so-expensive accommodation with good location. Just don't expect too much--its price is reasonable for what you are going to get.
Fantastic Location and Great Deal
Stayed there for 4 nights and had a blast. Within walking distance of the tube, right around from the British Museum, and many nice restaurants, souvenir stands, and pubs. Easy to get around town from here. I was able to hit all of the priority sites and have a nice quiet neighborhood to retreat to after a full day of sightseeing. The hostel was great with friendly, helpful staff. The showers always appeared to be clean, although I was up higher - so they may get less use. If you arrive too early, there's a downstairs luggage room to leave your things until check-in time. Take in the British museum while you wait if you get the chance - it's very close and free! Cabs come through the area regularly, so no problem nabbing one. but I was able to walk all the way to Trafalgar Square and beyond from there in about half and hour, so not unreasonably far from the major sites. All in all a great place for the bargain traveler.
Even the low price doesn't make up for it
I stayed in a private 2 bed room with my sister on this trip. The staff during our stay was excellent and very helpful. We each got a free 40 minute internet card with 2 computers available to use. We had to stay in the separate building a few blocks away. Our bathroom was down a flight of stairs and the free breakfast was held in the main building (2 cereals, oatmeal, bread, jams and spreads, milk, and meat and cheese slices). The location is excellent. The reason I give it such a low rating is partly because we had a mouse in our room. In all fairness, there is a rule against food in the rooms, but I had forgotten there was food in my bag as we were exhausted after our plane flight. I hated the room because it was rather depressing and looked out onto a ledge of beer bottles and cigarette butts. Our fellow hostellers were quite noisy and the slamming of doors can be heard throughout the night (although this fact is true at Astor Quest and Victoria, as well). The floors are also rather squeaky. My sister and I stayed in three other Astor hostels and this was the worst. I liked the free internet access the best and the mouse the least.
Not for the grumbly...
I actually think this hostel could have been good, my friends and I might have just had a bad run-in. We reserved a 4-person room well in advance through Studentuniverse.com (we've never had problems with this method before), but when we got there, we were told there was a mistake with our booking and would have to be in a 8-person room for the first two nights, and be split up for the third--not cool. Also, our 8-person room was in the basement right outside the kitchen which apparently turns into drunk-party central every night. Needless to say, it was loud--and one night someone even pulled the fire alarm as a prank and ran into our room laughing, then ran back out--nobody else was in the room with us that night, so yes, he had a key and was therefore an employee. The guy that actually runs everything is really nice, but I dont think he had alot of control of his staff. The location though is pretty amazing--right across the street from the British museum and a quick trip on the tube to get to places like piccadilly square, china town, and abbey road. In short--don't get stuck in the basement. The only reason I reccoment it is because it's the best value for your money (keeping in mind that it's the heart of London)
Problems
As I arrived a half an hour before, I was requested to come back after another half.
The surprise was that my booking contained, as the manager explained me, an error and they requested me to pay more than the amount specified in my booking form. It appeared to be an error at the time when I've made my booking, although I requested the hostel prior to my arrival a new confirmation.
They tried to make me pay more: I understood that instead of 60 for a twin room, 4 nights, they charged 30 for 2 nights but they wanted me to pay 70. Twice they tried to make me pay more than in the booking made one month before. I felt myself hunted and despised all the time.
I travel a lot for international conferences and it was my second speech at King's College London but this time it was absolute miserable. I felt very unconfortable and next time I'll book a hotel.
The location is very good, I had breakfast only once and I didn't enjoy it. The bathroom are much better than in other hostels. The walls are muddy and you can hear the other all the time. The carpets are in bad condition.
Last, you book a location but you may get a room elsewhere.
