During the last 40 to 50 years, the Turkish, Turkish-Cypriot and Kurdish communities have set up business networks and community centres around London, enabling each group to maintain its own distinct identity. There are said to be over 200,000 Turkish people in the UK, the majority of whom live in London. Many came over from Cyprus, with the first wave arriving in the 1950s and 60s. Since then the numbers have been increasing steadily. The most recent wave of Turkish immigrants - who have included writers, artists, journalists and a large number of Turkish Kurds - came in the 1980s. The Turkish community is spread around Lewisham, Lambeth, Southwark, Croydon, Haringey, Enfield, Islington and Hackney, specifically Stoke Newington High Street and Kingsland Road.
