Asian London

The word "Asian" does little to describe the profusion of cultural influences that people – and the descendants of people – from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka have brought to London and the UK.

"British" and "Asian" culture has, through the generations, intermingled to such an extent that often they can be indistinguishable. However, many Asian traditions and events are notable.

The current generation of British Asians is moving away from the traditional sectors of manufacturing and textiles, and entering retail, IT, medicine, pharmaceuticals, and the media.

An increasing number of young Asians are becoming influential in the arts – particularly literature, music, film-making and the performing arts – where they have been gaining awards and accolades. Many are also moving out of traditionally Asian neighbourhoods and setting up fashionable bars, restaurants and clubs in the capital's smartest areas.
