The Natural History Museum
Perché i dinosauri si estinsero? Quanto sono grandi i denti di un ippopotamo? Gli unicorni esistono davvero? Com'è la scossa di un terremoto? Una visita all'affascinante Natural History Museum risponde a tutte queste domande e a tante altre ancora. Ma ricordatevi di essere gentili con il diplodocus da 26 metri nell'atrio centrale!

Great museum, one of our favorite days in London
My fiance and I are a young couple who do a lot of traveling and we love museums, but after going to the Smithsonian we have been disappointed with most natural history museums we had been to. Fortunately, this one was a nice surprise! We really enjoyed it and spent several hours there. The animatronic T-Rex was very lifelike and was a nice addition. It was a beautiful building too, on the inside as well.
Great museum, but gets very busy and the dinasour section was mobbed
I was very impressed with every part of this museum, with loads of different sections and areas it felt like a proper day out and it was all very well organised. Even if you are not much of a museum goer, this is a great place to spend a few hours as it's just so interesting and good fun with it. We arrived at about 11.30am and got a bite to eat in the deli cafe, very expensive but wonderful food - for a cheaper option there is the normal canteen which we didn't know about til later. As we worked our way round the place was gradually getting busier and by the time we got to the dinosaur section in the afternoon we regretted leaving it til last. This was the only section where you have to queue it turned out, and with no air con in the exhibition it became really stifling - to the point that as soon as we finished queuing we rushed through to get back out again as it was just too much and too busy. The museum was great but that put a dampner on it, I wish we'd been told on arrival that seeing that section first would be a good plan before it gets really busy as we weren't expecting that at all after moving round the other exhibitions with no problems.
Simply the Best NHM
This is a superb Museum with a huge number of exhibits, many of them "active". It is free and the magnificent architecture is a joy to see. Take the Darwin Tour which is quite amazing - free as well but very professional, I can't believe that anyone (or their kids) could be disinterested unless they are very dull and boring. The queue is quick and necessary - don't complain - it for your own good. To moan that the building is dated is SO STUPID - it is a an historic building, a museum not a Holiday Inn, The Tower and Westminster Abby are dated too - don't go near them or you will have a nervous breakdown. The food is pricey but you can take your own no problem and the quality of the food is excellent, try it with the dull, bored uninterested kids, they may calm down and without their standard additive burgers and chips - they may even learn something!
A fantastic building, great opportunity for those with an interest in life.
Get there early!
Its no suprise that you have to queue a while to get in! We arrived just before 10am and the only had to queue for about 10mins. (When we left at about midday we overheard that the queue time was 45mins!)
We bought a museum programme guide for £4.50 at the door which was a great souvenier. We took some lovely pictures of the outside of the building which is pretty amazing in itself.
We visited the blue zone first where we saw the life size model of a whale - this area was very quiet with hardly anyone there! Later we went to the dinosaur area which was a bit of an anti climax i have to say. You walk round the area with a snail trail of people and cant stop to look at anything and lots of screaming children. Later on there were HUGE queues to see this area- i think alot of people would be just as disappointed as we were with this exhibit.
I visited with just my husband as we dont have children. I found the place to be very overcrowded and the constant screaming and shouting from bored children became too much in the end! My husband was actually shoved out the way on several occasions by young children!!!
There is loads to see but the displays seem a bit crammed in.
On the up side, it is very educational and loads of interactive stuff for the kids (and adults too as i discovered with my husband!) Its great that you can see so much and not have to pay an entrance fee. I took lots of photos of the entrance hall as it really is a very beautiful building.
I used to love this place :(
Last week I thought I'd take my children to a place that I loved both as a child and as a student in London. However, my children didn't share my enthusiasm and to be honest I don't blame them. We were greeted by a 1hr 10 min wait to get into the museum. I completely understand the importance of security especially in these times but......after this long wait I was greeted by a bag checker. He asked me to open my bag and merely flashed a torch in there whilst asking me did I have anything sharp in there. There were 'hundreds' of people all waiting to come into the museum and yet there were 4 bag checkers!!! For a museum that was bound to be busy due to the time of the year to have only 4 bag checkers merely shining a light into bags is quite pathetic. If I was of that incliniation I could have easily hidden something nasty in the bottom of my bag despite the wait and the torch! The museum was horribly dated, the dinosaurs were disappointing, especially the animatronic section which is a fraction of the size it was some years ago (45 minute wait to see a moving t - rex!) hot and crowded. The children had lost interest in the queue and we were never able to get it back. Food inside expensive. Would never go again in holiday time.
