A good experience
Two friends and myself went on a Duck Tour yesterday, and found it a very enjoyable experience. We had been somewhat concerned about previous bad reviews, but in our experience it was excellent, and money well spent. The tour guide (Chris?) was very knowledgeable and gave an excellent and very interesting commentary. We had lived all our lives in and around London but still learnt things that we had not previously known. Altogether it was a most memorable outing, and I would certainly like to do it again.
Quack Quack! Quirky!
If you want to do something touristy, but different, then the Duck tour should be your choice. Other reviews might be unappreciative for the quirky comical commentary offered be the tour guides, but then I think this is all part of it - if you are taking a Duck tour you really should have a sense of humour to begin with.
The vessels used were original commisioned and used for DDay, only then they didn't have seats or a roof - so consider yourself lucky to be sitting down!
We went on the Duck on the worst weather day we've probably had all year, it rained all the time, we still however enjoyed the whole experience enormously.
After being shown around Westminter, Trafalgar Square and the rear of Buckingham Palace, you are launced into the Thames by the side of MI5; not for the feignt hearted! Once you get over the fact that 30 seconds ago the vessell in which you are sitting was driving along the road you start to enjoy the experience.
The Thames element of the tour isn't long, but it's sufficient to get an idea of the experience.
Go on - give it a try!
A very different tour of Westminster
I wouldn't recommend this tour if you're looking for a serious, fact-filled tour of London but as a quirky, fun and entertaining way to see London it's fabulous. Our guide, Matt, was hysterical. Our tour was part quiz, part karaoke, part interesting fact and part just plain fun. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and the entry and exit from the river is a hoot. Great fun.
fantastic!
I booked the london duck tour for myself, my friend and my 4 year old son. My friend has lived in london for years, but never dared go on it without a child!!! I have to say, it was absolutely fantastic!!! our guide, Nav, was telling some well rehearsed gags that made us groan, but i have to say he made me laugh and fortunately my son didnt understand them!!! we got to know some great facts about places that we'd not have found out any other way and my son absolutely loved going down the ramp into the water and was excited and enjoyed it when he got splashed! The only thing i would say is do take a jumper as it is chilly when steaming round the streets but definately worth the money!!
Novelty
Like a previous posting, the Ducktour does seem to employee shall we say 'unusual' tour guides which is not to everyone's taste. Our guide spent far too long trying to be a stand-up comedienne and this detracted from the useful information she did at times give out about the sights along the way. I wasn't expecting (or wanting) it to be a constant stream of facts and figures but unfortunately I found myself switching off when she reverted to Tommy Cooper impersonations (?!) and then ended up missing the interesting stuff! It has to be said that the lauch into the river really was exciting and the children loved it but have previously been on far better boat trips which are readily available along the embankment - that combined with an open-top bus tour would've probably been greater value for money. But, I guess it's the opportunity to experience an old WW2 amphibious vehicle that really gives the Ducktour its novelty factor and so it's not really comparable. Don't want to put anyone off as I think the Ducktour is probably one of those things you have to experience for yourself but we did come away feeling slightly disappointed.
