Astor Museum

Problems
As I arrived a half an hour before, I was requested to come back after another half.
The surprise was that my booking contained, as the manager explained me, an error and they requested me to pay more than the amount specified in my booking form. It appeared to be an error at the time when I've made my booking, although I requested the hostel prior to my arrival a new confirmation.
They tried to make me pay more: I understood that instead of 60 for a twin room, 4 nights, they charged 30 for 2 nights but they wanted me to pay 70. Twice they tried to make me pay more than in the booking made one month before. I felt myself hunted and despised all the time.
I travel a lot for international conferences and it was my second speech at King's College London but this time it was absolute miserable. I felt very unconfortable and next time I'll book a hotel.
The location is very good, I had breakfast only once and I didn't enjoy it. The bathroom are much better than in other hostels. The walls are muddy and you can hear the other all the time. The carpets are in bad condition.
Last, you book a location but you may get a room elsewhere.
Not the best of choices
This last february my husband and I travelled through Europe. Of course in London we could only expect a lower quality room for the same price we payed elsewhere, so it was the only city (together with Paris) where we had to settle for a different thing (for example, a shared bathroom). Being 30 years old and not in a really "hostelling" attitude, then, we didn't quite enjoy our stay at Astor Museum Inn. First of all, we still don-t know why, we couldn't be accomodated in the actual inn so we had to sleep in another house they own. Although it was only two blocks away so you still had the great location near British Museum, you had to walk this two block distance in the mornings just to get breakfast.
We were in a third floor and the bathroom was in the underground level, so we had to travel down and up a very steep staircase just to get there. I wear contact lenses and without them are really short-sighted, so going to the bathroom at night was quite something.
The rooms were very small and the walls very thin. Next to ours was a room for 6 persons and whenever we went out of the room we had to put up with the strong smell coming out of it (the door apparently couldn't close completely), and the noise could be heard constantly though the wall.
On the good side, we had cups and an electric water boiler in the room so we could fix us tea and soup. And, of course, the location was unbeatable. So, overall, what can I say? Just that we are going back to London in two weeks and this time we'll try a B&B.
Great location
I stayed here for 6 nights as a solo traveler in one of their 4-bed female-only rooms (which I highly recommend). I was on the 4th floor, and the stairs were very steep to get to it - if I'd had a larger suitcase, I don't think I could have made it to the top. The bathrooms on my floor were clean, and the beds were more comfortable than I expected. Breakfast was typical hostel fare - bread, cereal, and coffee. One nice perk is that you get a voucher for 40 minutes of free Internet when you arrive. The location is excellent - right across the street from the British Museum and easy walking distance to 3 Tube stations.
A few problems: During the mornings, the water wouldn't reach the 4th floor because everyone else was using it. It was also incredibly noisy at times -- especially when people stumbled in drunk at 3 am.
Overall, it was a good place to stay and was what I expected.
Don't Do It - Biggest Headache Ever
This hotel was nothing but problems. Despite the location, the rooms were filthy and the bathrooms needed a good scrub. The kitchen was tiny, you barely had room to move around and there were never enough tables & chairs.
To make things worse - the security was lacking. Quite a few of our personal items were stolen from our room. Even the police told off the manager for the pathetic locks they had installed, but she didn't seem to care.
The staff were more interested in partying than providing a service and weren't exactly helpful when we told them we were robbed.
I've stayed in my fair share of hostels throughout Europe, US and Australia and this is definitely one of the worst ones.
Very good!
Astor had huge bedrooms, a kitchen that you use to cook, a frig to store food, a free, excellent breakfast, and a very friendly staff. The bathrooms were ok. It was right behind the British Museum, and was close to several grocery stores and tubes. A very good value.
