Great hostel for a good price
Only stayed one night but enjoyed it alot. The beds, showers, and toilets were all very clean considering they're shared. There were two sets of shared showers and toilets on our floor, and I assume the it's the same for every floor. Security was good, the keycard was needed to get into the hallway, and needed again for the room. Breakfast was nothing special, unlimited toast and coffee/tea, a glass of juice, croissant, etc., but it does fill you up, so it's good enough. Less than five minute walk to the Swiss Cottage tube station. Free internet. Good stuff overall.
Better than a budget hotel!
My husband and I used hostelworld.com to book a private double room with a private bathroom for two nights for December 2007.
Our room was on the second floor, and the hostel had a lift, which was convenient considering how heavy our bags were. The room we were given was spacious, and was likely also used as a triple. We had a bunk bed (double bed on bottom, single bed on top) and a private bathroom. The bathroom was strange -- the sink, shower, and toilet were all in the same room, with no dividers - just a curtain around the shower faucet. When either of us took a shower, the entire bathroom was soaked - meaning you had to wait until it all dried out in order to use the sink or toilet -- very bizzare, but something we ran into 2 or 3 more times in Europe.
The hostel had free internet, but we could not access the wireless connection from our room. We had to go downstairs in order to use it.
The breakfast in the morning was not enjoyable -- we tried it the first day, and then went out for breakfast on our second day.
The hostel is near Swiss Cottage tube station, and is very close to the train station where you can take the chunnel train to Paris. It was convenient to get on the tube, but there is not a whole lot else around it -- just some shops and restaurants.
Home away from home
A luxury lodge at a backpackers price. I loved staying at this hostel because the staff were so welcoming. The bunk beds are solidly and thoughtfully constructed, with each bed having it's own personal light. It's easy to lounge around in the lounge all day and forget you're in one of the largest cities in the world. The cute Chapel bar provides cheap drinks - perfect to meet fellow guests to then go on and explore London's night life with. Convenient location between Swiss Cottage and Finchley road tube stations plus 24 hr bus routes. A short walk to Primrose Hill park with great views of London. Because this hostel is so confortable I ended up staying here for about three months before I finally sorted myself out with a flat - with one of the girls I met at the hostel.
Central digs at budget price..
Myself and a group of 18 friends have just stayed for 2 nights at Palmers Lodge. We had a room with 7 and a room with 12. (It should have been 8 and 14 but a couple dropped out last minute). They accommodated us in our own rooms, meaning we didn't share with anyone else. Probably for there benefit. The lodge itself is about 250 metres from Swiss Cottage which appears to be a nice area. We were out til late and felt completely safe walking around. Swiss cottage is really central and it only took us about 15 mins to get to westminster(Big Ben, London Eye etc) and the same to Bond st, Picadilly and countless other attractions. So for us a big thumbs up for location. The dorms were simple but clean, not ensuite, but there were several private showers on our floor and, by the way, the bathrooms were always spotless. The check-in staff were friendly and the whole place had a relaxed feel about it. Everyone was given a swipe card for entry to the rooms so access was no issue either. Our stay cost us L20 pppn and we thought this was excellent value considering it was central London. That also included breakfast, which consisted of orange juice, apple juice, tea, coffee, cereals as well as croissants and toast. It's self service. There is 24hr internet access and a bar area and lounge with tv and pool table. Check-in is 2 o'clock, but we arrived at 1 and our rooms were ready so we could check in right away. I would highly recommend this hostel for groups or singles / couples but don't expect a party atmosphere. If you're looking for somewhere clean, cheap and with good access to the major attractions and a relaxed atmosphere with fellow travellers from all over the world then this is the place for you.
