Beautiful, Luxourious Dept Store But Educate Yourself On VAT Tax
I love department stores. There aren't that many left in the US anymore of your good old-fashioned upscale department stores. Harrods is not only upscale, it has everything and displays it with the most advanced technology and trendy flair around! We had a blast walking thru the store and seeing all the beautiful wares on display. The food section is incredible and very packed with customers. We were there right before Easter and got to see all the wonderful Easter goodies being sold in the chocolate section and other food sections. We wanted to sit at the coffee bar there but it was full. There are cafes on every floor. We stopped at a cafe on the fifth floor and my husband had a banana/orange juiced drink that cost approx $10USD!!! That was our first clue that this wasn't an inexpensive place to loll away the afternoon. Don't eat or drink at Harrods unless you have money to spare. Also, educate yourself on the VAT tax before you shop at Harrods. My husband bought a backpack on 3/14/08 for 64.99BP which was approximately $135.23USD. VAT tax is 17.5 percent. The staff at Harrods sent us to the VAT tax department where a very well dressed woman took care of our paperwork which we thought meant they were filling out as much of the form as they could as a courtesy to save us the trouble since we had spent our money in their store. Not so! As we were walking away we looked at the form. They had charged us approximately. 6.0BP to fill out the form and we were getting back 3.0BP. The VAT tax is 17.5% but when they figure it on the forms it is around 14%(a fee they state), THEN they take out an additional amount to fill out the form. To make a long story short, we spent 64.99BP and our VAT tax refund was 3.0BP when the VAT tax is 17.5%! Does this make sense to you? Me either. A kind Harrods employee explained very eloquently how Harrods figures up the VAT tax but Einstein's theory of relatively is less complicated. Overall experience at Harrods? It's fun! Lots to look at, including the incredibly tacky Diana/Dodi display, just don't spend unless you've won the Lotto or want to take an equity loan out on your house. Three words: Expensive but fun! Forgot to add: If you are looking for a toast rack or the little tiny used tea bag holders, go elsewhere. Not a very good selection. Only tea bag holders the staff could find had Harrods written on it.
Best of the Best
I went to harrods and had a great time. There are many departmentrs in this store and the shops are undescrible!
It is rather expensive but its worth it once you've bought what you wish!
I think that the best part is the sweet store, it has giant easter eggs in easter and delicous sweets of all kinds!
So i stroingly recommend this shop to everyone, because it's a place that you won't forget!
You can also sign a memor book for princess diana.
So do yourself a favour and get out there and shop 'til you drop!
Best Gelati!!!
I love Harrods!!!
Has pretty much everything you need a departmental store. The stuff here is not very cheap but seriously were you expecting anything less?
The food has is a foodie's haven! Gelati is one of the best I've had. Krispy Kremes are there too.
Great place to browse even though it is pricey and most definitely worth a look!
Don't bother
On my first trip to London during Summer 2005, one of the places I was most eager to see was Harrod's. I had been told countless times, "Don't miss Harrod's!"
I would like to tell everyone: Don't bother!
Harrod's reminds me of "Value City," a junk emporium of closeouts located in Ohio. Oh, Harrod's merchandise is expensive and name brand, but there is absolutely no charm or atmosphere in the store. Crowds of people will jostle you and most of the employees will be new so they will be of no assistance to you at all. Additionally, rest rooms are very difficult to find.
The Egyptian decor and escalator are very tacky (and I have loved ancient Egyptian history my entire life.)
Harrod's pales in comparison to Chicago's grand Marshall Field's (unfortunately soon to become Macy's!) and to the grand magazines (department stores) of Paris. It is unbelieveable how utilitarian and unattractive Harrod's is.
Some of the art work and tiles in the infamous Food Hall is interesting, but certainly NOT a must see.
Be advised there is NO PLACE to sit and relax in Harrod's--except a fast food ice cream shop in the basement--where sundaes will cost you $12 US and up.
I got the impression that people who are impressed with New York's Bloomingdales would be right at home at Harrod's--insecure people with no taste who need others to tell them what to like and what to buy.
Save your time and money and skip Harrod's. If you must have something Gucci, there are many other places you can go. Shopping Harrod's is exhausting and unfulfilling. A final note: despite what you may have heard--there is NO dress code. It is not a "dress up" destination. People were there wearing everything from belly shirts to torn "T' shirts and cutoff jeans.
If you do your homework, you will learn that London natives and the Royals would not be caught dead in Harrod's--it is considered strictly for (tasteless)tourists.
For people who love to shop
I visited Harrods during my trip to London Dec. 1st-Dec. 4th, 2005. The hotel that I stayed at, Carlton Tower Hotel (great place), was conviently located near Harrods. So I went to shop there one day and was overwelmed with so many floors. This place was a maze but I thought it was fun. Yes, it is somewhat expensive to shop at Harrods but the experience in shopping there was awesome. It was pretty crowed at Harrods due to the holiday shopping and would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't sooo busy. Anyway, this place is huge so be perpared to get lost on your first time shopping at Harrods. I reccomend anyone who is a big shopper to put in on your trip agenda. Overall, this place is for shoppers not browsers. For those who didn't enjoy Harrods, well, yes, I would suggest to be in a good mood and patience when you shop 'cause this place is huge.
