This small museum specialising in the furniture and domestic interiors of the urban middle classes is not to be missed!

You can walk through various periods rooms from the 1600 to 2000.

Great way to see what London flats looked like inside historically.

Tube: Old Street (Northern Line). The museum is on Kingsland Rd and it takes about 15 mins to walk from the tube station.

This museum of period rooms is set up in an old almshouse. The almshouse and its gardens are a wonderful peaceful space in the busy city. Inside, there are many rooms with furnishings from the different periods in English history (I was startled to see one from the 1960's, which I remember well! They had it exactly right.). There is an excellent gift shop with everything from postcards to very expensive art objects.

Once you have been to all the major museums and galleries it's time to explore those off the beaten track.

The Geffrye Museum takes you through the history of English domestic interiors from 1600's to the 1990's. It's child friendly and pre-visit your child/ren might want to check out the online Kids Zone.

The first Saturday of each month one of the Almshouses is open for visits - well worth it - and the Herb Garden is open April to October.

There's a wealth of information on their website on how to get there plus activities such as workshops and study days for all ages.

At Christmas each room setting is decorated in the Christmas style of the period - I'm guessing starting with the Victorians as it was Prince Albert who brought us the Xmas Tree in the UK.

If you like Vietnamese food Kingsland Road is home to dozens of Vietnamese eateries.

We visited this museum in late August, 2008. Set in the former almshouses of the Ironmonger's Company in Shoreditch, East London. It is the only museum in the UK to specialise in furniture and domestic interiors of the urban middle classes. Especially interesting was the walk through time displays of living rooms from the 17th century display with oak furniture and panelling through to a late 20th century living space in a converted warehouse. Lovely detail with ornaments, artwork, wallpapers, curtains and furniture. Outside is a walled herb garden and a series of period garden rooms. Also the front lawns of the building are just perfect to either sit and read or just relax.
