The main protagonist Alexei, a tutor of the General's family, becomes besotted with his daughter Polina and gets into trouble by obeying her every capricious whim. He is drawn into a spiralling world of desire and debt which leads to his downfall, ending the opera a gambling addict and losing Polina.

His hatred of Tamerlano burning inside him, Bajazet nevertheless has to temper his anger out of concern for his daughter Asteria, whom Tamerlano wishes to marry though she is pledged to the Greek prince Andronico.

Based on a Christmas tale by Gogol, which mixes realistic village comedy with fairy-tale fantasy, the plot recounts how Vakula the blacksmith flies on the Devil's back to St Petersburg to find a pair of slippers worn by the tsarina herself in order to win the hand of his beloved Oxana.

    A witty, gritty, anti fairytale based on a mixture of Romanian, Norwegian and classical folk stories, about a princess who discovers she is to marry not a prince, but a hairy, smelly, muddy pig. Of course, underneath lives an enchanted king. Flora, the youngest daughter of King Hildebrand, is a feisty girl and is undeterred by the appearance of her new husband. When he is abducted by a wicked crone she sets out to rescue him and, with plenty of advice along the way from the Sun, the Moon and the North Winds, proves that love conquers all. Jonathan Dove's playful score brings the moon, the stars and the Milky Way to vivid musical life while Alasdair Middleton's witty lyrics entertain children and adults alike.
