Track cycling has been a fixture in the Olympic schedule since the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, bar the 1912 Games in Stockholm, and it remains one of the most exciting of the Olympic sporting events.
The other three Olympic cycling sports to look out for at London 2012 are BMX, road and mountain biking.
Track Cycling at the Olympic Games
Great Britain is traditionally dominant in track cycling, a trend which continued in Beijing in 2008 when British cyclists won seven of the 10 available gold medals.
Bradley Wiggins, who had previously won three golds at the 2004 Games, added two more to his total, while Chris Hoy followed a gold in Athens with three in Beijing – the first cyclist to win three gold medals in a single Olympic Games.
