The Athletics events feature 2,000 competitors, who will battle for 47 gold medals in a series of individual and team contests, testing the world's best in running, walking, throwing and jumping.

Athletics at the Olympic Games

One of the stars of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games was Usain Bolt. The Jamaican sprinter won 100m and 200m gold, breaking world records in both disciplines in the process.

Bolt also helped his team to the 4x100m relay triumph with another world record. Jamaica's women also excelled, taking five of the six individual medals on offer at 100m and 200m.

On the field, Norway's Andreas Thorkildsen swept all before him in the Javelin, winning his second Olympic gold.

Russia's Yelena Isinbayeva also wrote her name in history books with a second Olympic gold and a new world record in the women's pole vault.
