Paralympic Powerlifting at London 2012

Watch as powerlifting competitors battle it out for gold in a test of mental and physical strength at ExCeL London.

Unlike other Paralympic sports, competitors with differing disabilities are able to compete – as the competition is only defined by bodyweight.

Similar to weightlifting in the Olympic Games, powerlifting competitors lift weights in defined increments – but instead of standing, they lie on a bench.

Men and women compete in different weight categories, with 20 gold medals available.

Powerlifting at the Paralympic Games

Egypt and China have been particularly successful in powerlifting at the Paralympic Games in recent years.

In 2004, the two countries won 10 of the 20 gold medals on offer and a total of 28 medals in the discipline between them.

In 2008, the countries dominated further, winning 13 of the 20 gold medals.
