Boxing at London 2012

Look out for the future stars of the boxing ring during the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Run by AIBA, the sport's amateur body, the competition is not open to professional boxers, but instead young, upcoming fighters ready to announce themselves to the world.

A total of 286 competitors will battle it out in the ring for 13 gold medals. Women's boxing will also be included in the London 2012 Games after a ruling by the International Olympic Committee.

Boxing at the Olympic Games

The Olympic Games have helped to launch the careers of many of the world's best boxers, none more so than Muhammad Ali. More recently, Britain's Audley Harrison, Amir Khan and James DeGale took their first steps to glory at the Games.

At the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, the medals were spread out between many different nations. China, Thailand, Mongolia, Ukraine, Russia, Dominican Republic, Great Britain and Italy all gained gold medals to add to their overall tallies.
