London 2012 Olympic Games: Judo

Watch the gripping judo competition during the London 2012 Olympic Games at ExCeL London.

Judo at London 2012

See competitors battle it out in judo, one of two martial arts at the London 2012 Olympic Games; the other being taekwondo.

A test of discipline, strength and tactical awareness, judo is a fascinating sport to watch as competitors look for every chance to exploit their opponent's weaknesses.

There are 14 gold medals up for grabs in total, plus two bronze medals in each competition strand, due to the format of the event.

Men and women compete in seven separate weight classes and the competition is judged on points for certain moves.

Judo at the Olympic Games

Japan, traditionally the dominant nation in the sport, won the most Judo medals at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, including four gold medals.

Other notable medal wins included a gold for Azerbaijan's Elnur Mammadli, the country's only gold medal at the 2008 Games. Hesham Mesbah of Egypt won the North African country's only medal with gold in the men's 90kg class.
