Weapons, Equipment & Vehicles

The Department's collection covers the weapons of the British and Commonwealth soldier from the age of the longbow to the present day. It includes 2,500 edged weapons, 200 pole-arms and 1,850 firearms. There are also in excess of 7,000 items of personal equipment, including iconic objects such as Florence Nightingales lamp and Lord Raglans Crimean telescope. The collection also includes scientific tools, musical instruments, armour and horse furniture. Among the many models and dioramas, there is a stunning 420 square foot model of the Battle of Waterloo complete with over 70,000 model soldiers. The Department looks after over 200 vehicles, tanks, armoured cars and artillery pieces, including a bronze Tudor cannon and one of the last World War Two Smith Guns in existence.
