Pop Life at Tate Modern

This new show at London's Tate Modern art gallery explores the relationship between art, commerce and celebrity.

Art as a sellable commodity – and the artist as businessperson – are ideas that became more closely aligned during the 20th century and into the new millennium.

To do this, many artists used mass media tools and the cult of celebrity to gain maximum exposure for their work, often in a self-referential way.

Contemporary Artists in the Media

Pop Life: Art in a Material World looks at how generations of artists since the 1980s have promoted their work by cultivating strong media personas and creating their own brand.

Andy Warhol claimed that "good business is the best art". And many of today's artists have taken this idea and run with it, such as Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, whose works have sold for millions.
