In Fort Dupre, South Dakota, Kit Carruthers is a garbage man courting teenager Holly Sargis. The young girl is infatuated by Kit and thinks he looks like actor James Dean. Her widower father however objects to their relationship. Kit kills her father with a pistol and they flee for the Midwest leaving behind a trail of random murders.
