London Assurance at Bromley Little Theatre

London Assurance' is a play by Anglo-Irish playwright Dion Boucicault, written in 1841. Since then it has been performed relatively infrequently but in 2010 was the subject of a sensationally successful production, directed by Nicholas Hytner at the National Theatre with Simon Russell Beale and Fiona Shaw in the leading roles. Boucicault was a supreme entertainer and the play is a highly amusing comedy of manners which explores age old tensions between town and country dwellers with passing glances at fashion, foxhunting, the law, and Gloucestershire and a prescient nod to Oscar Wilde and Bunburyism on the way.
