Directed by Hampstead Artistic Director Edward Hall, this is the stage version of the classic film - the inspiring true story of sprinters Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, two great athletes and outsiders who overcome prejudice and personal strife to compete in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Award-winning designer Miriam Buether transforms Hampstead Theatre (and after that the Gielgud Theatre) into its very own stadium giving an immersive experience that evokes the Olympics of the time. The production also features the legendary Vangelis score with additional live music and arrangements by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Carr. The play is an adaptation (of Colin Welland's script) by Mike Bartlett, an increasingly important voice in modern theatre. His plays include Earthquakes in London for Headlong Theatre, 13 for the National, Love, Love, Love for Paines Plough, C*ck, Contractions and My Child at the Royal Court, and Artefacts at the Bush. He is currently Writer-in-Residence at the National Theatre. His play C*ck won an Olivier award in 2010 for Outstanding Achievement and he won the Writer’s Guild Tinniswood and Imision prizes for Not Talking, a radio play for BBC.
