The Tree of Life and the Eternal Garden at Vestry House Museum
| Dates: | 4 April 2012 to 27 May 2012 |
|---|---|
| Venue: | Vestry House Museum |
An interfaith art exhibition inspired by the Christian and Islamic traditions. New artworks by Christian and Muslim artists, responding to the theme The Tree of Life and the Eternal Garden. The artworks explore the shared heritage of, and commonalities between, the two traditions. The Tree of Life is a unifying symbol and one that can cross cultural and religious divides. It is redolent of the Abrahamic Tree, which is comprised of all the branches, flowerings and fruits of the Jewish, Christian and Islamic faiths. Foliate and floriate motifs are common to both Christian and Islamic art. The artworks in the exhibition look at the differing ways that these motifs are used, represented and developed in the visual cultures of the two peoples and the underlying, common symbolism.
