Marathon at the Olympic Games
The first modern Olympic Games in 1896 included a marathon.
In 1908 the race's length was extended from about 25 miles to 26.2 miles (42km) so that it finished in front of the Royal Box. This distance is still used today.
The Olympic and Paralympic Marathons are much smaller than the London Marathon and other similar events, with around 80 athletes taking part in each race.
