History of Art. Varieties of Modernism, British Art Between the Wars: 1914-1945 at Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution

The story of 20th-century art has, until recently, privileged abstraction and those artists associated with the development of abstraction. In this story only three British artists participate: Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. This course will examine the supposed insularity of British art and artists during and between the wars to reconsider modernism in British art.
