The Royal Ballet bring Frederick Ashton's charming and comic tale of forbidden love among the haystacks back to the Royal Opera House.
La Fille Mal Gardée at the Royal Opera House
It is now over 50 years since Frederick Ashton reworked this centuries-old ballet, yet his light-hearted depiction of rural life and young love ensures its enduring popularity.
Young Lise, the titular Fille Mal Gardée (wayward daughter), is in love with the farmer's son Colas and determined to marry him. Unluckily for her, however, her interfering mother would much rather she married the rich, dim-witted Alain to cement her place in society.
With the day of her wedding looming, a humorous battle ensues between the two lovers and Lise's ever watchful mother, bringing mayhem to a rural setting that teems with colourful characters – not to mention a brood of dancing chickens!
Staged on the magical sets for which the Royal Ballet is renowned, this production is a truly enjoyable spectacle for people of all ages.
