BBC Proms 2012

The greatest classical music festival on earth returns to London's Royal Albert Hall. It's time for the Proms!

Proms 2012

This year's BBC Proms are part of the Cultural Olympiad 2012, a four-year programme of cultural events leading up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Reflecting London's momentous year on the global stage, the 2012 BBC Proms programme is packed with world premieres, beloved classics and internationally renowned musicians.

Tickets are available now from the BBC website. Use the BBC's handy planner to schedule your attendance, or see our selected highlights for inspiration.

Selected Highlights

Between 20 and 27 July Daniel Barenboim and the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra will be performing the entire Beethoven symphony cycle, culminating in a performance of the Ninth Symphony on the opening day of the Olympic Games.

Marvel at the spectacular first and last night concerts, or wave your flags in Hyde Park at the popular Proms in the Park celebrations.

Enjoy a diverse series of operas, including Glyndebourne's semi-staged version of Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, Berlioz's The Trojans and ground-breaking new work Nixon in China.

Chill out at late night proms, featuring big band music from the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, the exciting Kronos Quartet and a free concert of Handel's Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks.

Hear music from stage and screen, including a star-studded version of My Fair Lady and Gilbert and Sullivan's operetta The Yeoman of the Guard.

Take the whole family: enjoy a fun children's prom with Wallace and Gromit or a family matinee on Bank Holiday Monday.

Explore chamber music at lunchtime concerts at Cadogan Hall or at many of the proms. We recommend Prom 66: an ambitious performance of Bach by organist Cameron Carter.

Hear major British choral works, including Elgar's the Apostles & Howells's Hymnus Paradisi, conducted by Martyn Brabbins.

Go behind the scenes with Proms Plus, a series of free workshops, talks and events. You can even attend singing sessions with some of the musicians!

What are the Proms?

"Proms" is short for Promenade concert: informal and inexpensive concerts where Promenaders ("Prommers") pay just £5 for a ticket.

Up to 900 Prommers can stand in the central Arena at London's Royal Albert Hall, and a further 500 can stand, sit or recline in the Gallery.
