Franck’s Piano Quintet stands at this programme’s centre. The composition’s 1879 première marked a watershed moment in the history of chamber music, thanks not least to its broad emotional range and abundant passion, possibly inspired by Franck’s infatuation for one of his young students. This concert likewise broadens the repertoire with a new work, co-commissioned by Britten Sinfonia and Wigmore Hall, by Luke Bedford, resident composer at Wigmore Hall. Bedford has been noted for writing music of brooding intensity, in which every note carries maximum expressive impact.

A French strand threads its way through the programme as Thomas Ades conducts works by Couperin, his own Three Studies on Couperin and Ravel's tribute to the memory of 18th-century French music. This compelling concert climaxes with Ades' own Violin Concerto performed by mercurial Pekka Kuusisto. Subtitled Concentric Paths, each of the concerto's three movements has its own circular design containing spiralling high jinks, shifting harmonic sands and other-worldly soundscapes. There is also a pre-concert talk with Pekka Kuusisto.

Leading tenor and regular Britten Sinfonia collaborator Mark Padmore brings all his artistry to this Viennese programme of beguiling song. At its heart lies Mahler's four captivating and haunting songs of love, loneliness and longing, Vier Ruckert-Lieder. In addition Padmore will sing Schubert Lieder in elegant and tender orchestrations by Webern. The concert concludes with Schubert's sparkling Symphony No 5. Written for a private orchestra, with no pretensions of being made public Schubert's Fifth Symphony is one of his most engaging, containing a wonderful inventiveness. There is also a pre-concert talk with Padmore.
