Britten Sinfonia's acclaimed cycle of Beethoven Concertos with Imogen Cooper which has received glowing reviews and audience praise comes to its grand finale this season. On this occasion Imogen again performs and directs the orchestra in the majestic and noble 'Emperor' concerto. The first half of the programme provides an eloquent contrast with one of the finest and most spirited works of Mozart's early career, and a major work by on of the 20th century's greatest composers, Luciano Berio. Mozart: Symphony No. 35 in D major, K.385 (Haffner); Berio: Notturno for String Orchestra; Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 5 (Emperor). The sound of the oboe is explored in this concert, performed by one of the finest musicians in the UK, Nicholas Daniel. Mozart's Oboe Quartet is in effect a chamber concerto for the oboe, full of memorable melodies and charm. This is set alongside a new work by German composer, Ulrich Kreppein, Schubert's String Trio and Mozart's Adagio. The programme is completed by Colin Matthews' beautiful arrangement of Schumann's haunting lament to the moon. BBC New Generation artist, Gwilym Simcock sits at the meeting point of classical and jazz music. Hailed as both a gifted pianist and imaginative composer, Gwilym presents a new work in which he will also perform. Forming the perfect partner to Gwilym's work Ravel's Piano Trio has a texture of sound unusually rich for a chamber work and is known for the high level of virtuosity required. Messiaen's Louange à l'ternité de Jésus is a movement from his Quartet for the End of Time, composed while Messiaen was held in a prisoner of war camp. BYMSE is a small string ensemble made up of some of BYMT's talented younger string players. Its two-fold aim is to explore some of the more ambitious string repertoire than is possible with the larger Saturday groups, and develop chamber music playing skills - this ensemble often performs without a conductor. Entry is by invitation. Brass Band -This popular group meets as part of the chamber music scheme, playing concert and contest repertoire, as well as popular selections. Big Band - this newly formed group consists of saxophones, trumpets and trombones, as well as a full 5-piece rhythm section. The Big Band plays a wide range of jazz based music, ranging from Latino and Afro-Cuban to swing, as well as rock.
