This evening programme brings to London one of the music world's most exciting current partnerships. Mariss Jansons took over the Royal Concertgebouw in 2004, following in the illustrious path of Riccardo Chailly and, before him, Bernard Haitink; over the last half century they have between them shaped one of the world's finest ensembles. Brahms's mighty Fourth symphony was the composer's last, and is an undisputed highpoint in orchestral music. From its earnest but troubled-sounding opening to its dramatic end, it is a grippingly passionate work, rich in powerful themes. Also programmed are two works from Czech composers, Martinu's Sinfonia concertante for 2 orchestras and the Overture from Smetana's comic opera The Bartered Bride.

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam: Mahler

It is no hyperbole to describe Mahler's Second Symphony as among the most ambitious, profound and moving works in all music. Across almost one-and-a-half hours it draws on substantial musical forces to explore no less a topic than that of life, death and immortality. The result is both deeply spiritual and powerfully human. The 'Resurrection' Symphony is always one of the most eagerly awaited events of any concert season, and no more so than when the orchestra is the Royal Concertgebouw, an ensemble with a strong link to Mahler dating to 1903, when the composer conducted them in his Third Symphony.
