The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment's annual study day focuses on Beethoven's Symphonies. The 11am session looks at the historical context of the symphonies - the events, politics and culture of Beethoven's time, before going on to look at how Beethoven's music responded to the events around him. The 2pm session examines how a period instrument ensemble such as OAE performs Beethoven's music as well as looking at other approaches to it, and day ends with an in-depth analysis of Symphony No.3, Eroica. The morning session is suitable for everyone, no musical knowledge required, while for the afternoon session some musical knowledge would be beneficial.
