Our archival imagery is sourced from the Hulton|Archive which comprises over 300 separate collections and in excess of 40 million negatives, making it one of the greatest resources of original archive photography in the world. The library was founded by Edward Hulton, publisher of the seminal news weekly, Picture Post which revolutionised photojournalism and picture magazine publishing in Britain and beyond. In 1957 the archive was bought by the BBC who added the Daily Express and Evening Standard collections providing coverage of British and international events and personalities from 1939 to the early 1980s.

  • Giles Duley: One Second of Light

    Exhibition

    7 December 2009 to 11 December 2009

    Coningsby Gallery W1T 4RJ[map]

The Coningsby Gallery presents the first UK solo show by the acclaimed documentary photographer Giles Duley. Working in the humanitarian field, Giles partners with well respected charities such as Medecins sans Frontiers, IOM and UNHCR to highlight lesser known stories deserving of public attention and action. Although documenting challenging, and at times, horrific situations, Giles captures the strength of those who fight their adversity rather than succumb. Rather than shock his photographs draw the viewer to the subject, creating intimacy and empathy for lives only differing from ours in circumstance. One Second of Light is a collection of forty-four images shot over the last year. The images tell as yet often untold stories including the plight of the Rohingya refugees, victims of acid attacks in Bangladesh and post conflict Angola. While each image is a powerful narrative, the total exposure time in camera of all the images in the exhibition is only a single second of time - a mere blink of the eye - One Second of Light.

Monochrome Materialism by Toby Christian and Rob Leech. Both artists' works attempt to deal with their own existence as art, and with colour and material. Toby Christian uses pretence as a starting point, from challenging orthodox display methods to showing the infinite dimensions of colour in space. Rob Leech treads the line between comic and ironic, as he creates continuous, self-creating gestures reminiscent of abstract painting but on another level, of real life movements like pouring liquid or breathing.
