The Museum explores the story of London's River, Port and People, from Roman settlement of the port, through to the recent regeneration of London's former Docklands - a 2000-year storyline. The permanent displays pay homage to the people who helped to build and shape the City of London- and those who continue to do so. Artefacts, engravings, paintings, testimonies and photographs drawn from the outstanding collections of the Museum of London and the Port of London Authority, emphasize the skills and ingenuity of Dockland communities.

The Port and River collection comes from three main sources, the Port of London authority museum, and material collected by Museum of Londons during 1970s and 1980s and material collected more recently by museum in Docklands. The collections have a unique significance to Londons history, given that the port has provided the key to so much of Londons economic and social importance over 2,000 years. Its have models of river craft, sailing ships and steamers from 18th. Shown photographs of huge quantities of cargo were transferred direct from ships to lighters, or barges.

This gallery covers the period 1800 1840. This relatively short period of time was a watershed for the docks, and London as a whole. It was characterised by powerful economic, technological and social change. The wide variety of displays in the gallery bares testament to this. The West India docks were established to accommodate trade from the West Indies. This was built on the back of thousands of slaves forcefully, and horrifically, transferred from Africa to the Caribbean. The slave trade was abolished in Britain in 1807. It was abolished in all British colonies in 1834.

In 1940, the City of London suffered its worst night of bombing and incendiary fires of the Second World War. This guided walk discovers the stories of danger, destruction and sadness the City faced that night and in its aftermath. The walk visits the main sites and streets affected, discovering how London planned for the war and how a combination of heroism and luck prevented the total devastation of the most historic area of London.

Through sensitive and informative displays featuring film, artefacts, interactive touch screens, models and life-size reconstructions the visitor is given a full understanding of how the Second World War affected the Docklands area and communities, One of the Museums most treasured possessions is a flag that flew from the bow of one of the first landing crafts to reach France during the D-Day landings on 6th June 1944. It was found among the effects of George Sluman, who was coxswain of the craft, and donated to the Museum by his widow Joyce. George worked as a waterman before the war in the Port of London. Men with his expertise on the water were enlisted to support the massive allied assault upon fortress Europe on D-Day. Other exhibits explore the Port's role in the Dunkirk rescue and secret projects such as construction of the Maunsell Forts; Pipe Line Under The Ocean and the huge breakwaters for the Mulberry Harbours.
