Widower Henry Hobson runs a boot maker's shop in nineteenth-century Salford and has a weakness for a drink and for the pub opposite. He tries his best to rule the lives of his three disobedient daughters. However, his eldest daughter Maggie rebels against her father and sets out to destroy him by setting her sights on Will Mossop, her fathers star boot maker. They get married against his wishes and set about setting up in competition. She then goes about assisting her sisters in finding the men they want to marry.
