History of Art. Varieties of Modernism, British Art Between the Wars: 1914-1945 at Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution
From
£59.00
(CAD92.28)Course11 January 2012 to 20 June 2012
Highgate Literary and Scientific Institution N6 6BS[map]
The story of 20th-century art has, until recently, privileged abstraction and those artists associated with the development of abstraction. In this story only three British artists participate: Ben Nicholson, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore. Only they are seen to transcend the ‘Englishness’ of British art and become part of the international movement of abstraction. However, abstraction was not the only language of modernism. This course will examine the supposed insularity of British art and artists during and between the wars to reconsider modernism in British art.
