This feature-length documentary-musical with a cast of hundreds is paired with a 1966 collaboration of Terayama and Hagimoto Haruhiko made for Japan’s burgeoning television industry. Who are you? is structured by the responses of 829 people of all ages and gender to the same questions, brilliantly playing out Daniel Boorstin’s concept of the ‘pseudo-event’ in the busy modernity of Shinjuku.
