Very pretty and calm
This is really easy to find. You can take the southwest train from Waterloo to Hampton Court. When you get out of the train station, walk over the Thames River and the Palace is on the right side. The gardens are beautiful and everything is kept up wonderfully.
Pain to get to but worth a day's trip!
IT's a bit hassly getting to Hampton Court Palace but once you get there it's pretty amazing!
Place is filled with so much history and stunning architecture. The gardens are very pretty and the tours are somewhat entertaining.
Set aside a day to spend there and enjoying the spaciousness and greenery which is seldom seen in London itself!
Pricey, but worthwhile
Hampton Court is a architectural hotch potch of a place, part tudor part later period baroque. We spent 3 hours here as we were on a schedule, but you could easily stay longer if you wanted to. Audio guides are inlcuded in the £13 adult admission fee (as of nov 2007)
Highlights were the remarkably intact Tudor kitchens and indeed all of the Tudor wing. I thought the georgian rooms were a little less impressive. Nothing out of the ordinary when you have visited a few houses of this type. BUT Wren's south front is very impressive from the exterior and the gardens are magnificent.
On the whole i'd recommend a visit to this place over Buckingham Palace, there is much more history here. But £13 is a bit steep.
A little bit disappointed !
I had visited the palace seven years ago and really enjoyed it but after a nagging from my daughter we visited again yesterday ( 28th August ).
I made the drive from Kent and found it really easily as the directions were clear from the M25.
We each paid £ 13 which included the Palace, gardens and the maze.
The gardens were beautiful and in full bloom and we even paid an extra £ 2 to take a tour round by wagon which was interesting -although the large fountain was not switched on when we passed as we were told it only comes on every ten - fifteen minutes to save costs !!
Two if by biggest disappontments were the rooms in the house and the cost of lunch.
Remembering back the rooms were filled with interesting furniture, objects, ornaments and pictures but now a lot seem empty with only a few pictures on the walls and no furniture in some and others with just a bed and again pictures and so going around the house can be done quite quickly.
Yes there are people in period costume and I enjoyed a talk given by one man about the history of the house but no costumes to look at and yes the house is lovely but you cannot stare at the outside for ever.
We bypassed the coffee shop and decided to eat in the cafe so we could have a hot meal but with only three choices ( none of which we like ) we opted for a sandwich- two sandwiches, two cakes, two packets of crisps and two drinks cost £ 18 !!
No wonder tourists think the UK is expensive.
Perhaps a lot of the furniture etc was removed after the fire but I now think it is time to put it back and make the Palace a place than will be remembered.
A nice day trip while visiting London
We visited in July 07 and had a wonderful day at the Palace, mostly because the weather was beautiful and sunny so we could enjoy the amazing grounds and gardens. It was a Tuesday so it was not crowded. My kids were disappointed with the hedge maze as it was smaller than we expected. We had lunch at the cafe and enjoyed that. We got a good deal at the Waterloo train station buying tickets that included the 35 mins train ride and entrance to the Palace. It really is only a five minute walk to the Palace grounds. We liked walking through the Palace and watching the video about it's history. It was the only Palace we visited while in London as Buckingham was closed and Windsor was further travel time so I can't compare. We're happy that we got to see it.
