Doesn't make me want to live under the sea...
Wheni think Aquarium I think of having a dry undersea adventure. All the other Aquariums I've been to made me wish I could live under the sea with all these beautiful exhibits and fish.
This Aquarium however was pretty dreary and plain. It felt like mostly underground, very dark. The only things I really enjoyed was the big circular tank with the sharks and the tank that you can stand around and look down on the fish, mostly rays and such are in this tank.
There were a few types of fish that I was impressed by, but all and all it was not very exciting. We went to this on the first day of our trip after the london eye voyage since it was so close, we took lots of pictures..i think it was because we were so excited to be in London on our Honeymoon...afterwards going through the pictures most of them got deleted and I found myself saying things like " omg god how many pictures of fish does one person need" "man the lighting is bad" and "what was wrong with us that we took over 100 pictures of boring fish"
I am going back in July 2009 with my little sister who is 12...we will probably take her here but only because its a 2 min walk from our hotel and it will kill a little time.
More like a dungeon!
We are a family who has travelled to most major cities and been to any aquarium or water attraction we come across and so thought we should take in this one for comparison. It was awful! You are underground the entire time, dark dingy crowded halls that wind around and then just when your claustrophobia has hit its peak and you are looking for the light at the end, you have to turn around and double back to get out. The displays were mediocre at best. It is definitely NOT worth the ticket price and is in our opinion is a must-avoid when going to London. Better takes? Don't miss the Churchill war museum and Imperial War Museum across the river. Both are among the best museums we have ever been to. And for the kids the natural history museum was a hit - you can easily spend a whole day there.
Waste of time and money!!!
My sister and I decided to take a trip to the London Aquarium with my 2 daughters (2 and 5) thinking it would be a great place to take them! How wrong we were. We paid £26 to get in and that was with the 2 for 1 offer you get but as I have read in other reviews we feel we were cheated as this was still very expensive for what it was. This really was an awful place, there are no child friendly interaction bits for them to do, its very dark and dull inside.Old and dated, definatley in need of a refurb! We were only in there for 30 mins, such a waste of time. We were also not told of any feeding times or given any information. VERY POOR. The one in Bournemouth is 10 times better and you get an open ticket allday so can go back in as many times as you want.
Anyway if you are in London and want to go to the Aquarium give it a miss and go to The Science Museum, we went there after! Its free to get in and there are lots of hands on, educational fun things for all ages of kids to do and we were in there for over 2 hours!!
Watch the Thames for free!
I took my partner (a real fishophile) to the London Aquarium on the 3rd June 2008 as a birthday treat.
Stupidly we had not booked in advanced so we missed out on two possible reductions (booking online has a 10% reduction and we are both over 60). There was just one person at a desk to service both the 'not booked in advance' and 'fast track' tickets and it was not at all clear which line to stand in. We were not offered any guide to the place, either free of paid for.
The entrance to the Aquarium is gloomy in the extreme and the whole place feels old and shabby and well in need of attention. Having been to one in Perth, Western Australia perhaps my expectations were a little high but this is the centre of London and as such should be top notch. I would have been mortified if I had come more than 60 miles for this.
Perhaps because this is popular with tourists notices should be in several languages. I saw a small German boy having a great time banging his hands in the water, despite a huge sign saying 'no splashing'. Nearly everyone was taking photos, again despite signs saying 'no flash photography'.
And finally, we were somewhat surprised that there was not one single cod or sea bass (two of our most common North Sea inhabitants) in the whole place.
Standing outside leaning on the wall watching life go by on the Thames and listening to Big Ben for free was worth the trip though.
Altogether a rather disappointing visit.
Great outing, good value and lots to see
My ten year old daughter was determined to go to the London Aquarium, but after reading the reviews here I was dreading the possible major disappointment. I couldn't have been more wrong, we had a great time. I thought that going in half term at 11am was probably going to be a nightmare, but we only queued for 5 minutes to buy our tickets. Once inside, there were plenty of people, but we had no trouble seeing all of the exhibits. There was masses to see, the place was well laid out, the descriptions of the fish were succint enough to keep our interest without going into over lengthy detail and I thought that the whole thing had been done with great imagination. Although I agree that it's quite expensive, I felt that it was worth it. Everywhere you looked there was something that was interesting. We both loved the shark tank, the hands-on tank, all of the smaller tanks with easy to see exhibits in them and especially the sea horse 'temple'. it was good to see that our indigenous fish weren't forgotten either. At last I have seen a home-grown stickleback. I thought everything looked well-tended and clear and the underwater feel of the whole place was totally in keeping with the fishy feel of it all. There have been lots of comments on trip advisor about how difficult it is for small children and babies in prams to see anything. I took note of the deep shelves that there are at the edges of most of the tanks, where children could sit to see inside and if I were going there with a baby in a pram, I would make sure I avoided the busy times. True of practically any tourist attraction. I am looking forward to going back there with my three older children, they will love it.
