Staying in a dorm-room
The University of Westminster Halls - Furnival house is located within a 10-15 minute walk from the Archway station (take the Northern Line) in outer London. I believe the walk in rate is around 21 pounds a night for a single room. You can walk from Archway station, but its a rather steep hill. Take a bus and get off at Highgate Hill stop and your walk will be much shorter.
As for our stay, we stayed in a single room in early September. Our stay was certainly not the greatest, especially with hostels.com / Furnival house messing up our re-booking and not having our new booking information. We had to pay for 2 nights instead of the 1 night we were going to be there. The reception was not particularly helpful in this matter.
The room was very small with a single dorm bed, a desk, and a wardrobe. Very cramped, but to be expected. There is a sink and minor in the room, but the bathroom and shower room are in the hallway (seperate, each wing has both). There is also a shared kitchen down the hall that was decent and was equipped with utensils, cooking ware, a big fridge, and a table etc. There is no air conditioning, so it is hot in the summer. The walls are also very thin and you can hear your neighbors and especially the loud cleaning people in the morning. A group of cleaners had a loud conversation outside our door and were noisy in general at a very early time. They also barged in as they knocked, without waiting, which was rather annoying.
The only real positives to this lodging was the free internet (ask for a code) and the adapter being available for wall outlets.
Overall impression, cheap and not close to downtown. There are some decent restaurants and a small super-market down the street, but this Zone-3 lodging is probably not worth the effort.
Furnival House Apartment - better for young adults than mature ones.
I stayed for a week at Furnival House in one of the two apartments. It was your basic dorm room with it's own bathroom and kitchen. Two twin beds (single mattress cot-style and not very comfortable). Kitchen provided cutlery, plates, washing up liquid, glasses, pans, and that's about all. Located in the basement, which made it quite dark even with the French doors that opened out basically to a view of the retaining wall (you had to look up to see the sky). Has its own television with 5 channels. Laundry room across the hall. Quiet enough after eleven p.m, but reminded me a lot of my college dormitory life from 20 years ago (beige walls, naked lightbulbs, cinderblock walls, exposed pipes). I prefer a little more luxury, although the price could not be beat at £52 pounds per night. I would not stay there again, but I do recommend it for young adults or those on a strict budget.
