Wonderful Acoustics, Terrific & Inexpensive Cafe
St Martins is known around the world for recorded concerts, and there is no better way to experience one than here, especially by candlelight. In response to another reviewer who didn't understand the big deal, if you're looking to be awestruck, go down the street. St Martin's charrms are more subtle. It is a very graceful building, and it's lightly gilded ceiling is like a wonderful, frothy cake decoration.
The Cafe in the Crypt is overlooked by the throngs in Trafalgar Square, and has fabulous, tasty, temptingly fragrant food at a very, very reasonable price, with a very good selection. It was a welcome relief from the "meal deals" on every corner of the square. Try the Apple Crumble with Custard Sauce if it's on the menu, but be forewarned, one dish is more than enough for a couple.
Even the non classical husband loved the concert!
If you can arrange a trip here whilst there is a concert on, I urge you to do it.
Having just returned after seeing Mozarts Reqieum by candle light it was a fantastic evening, even the non-classical husband loved it!
We paid top price tickets £24 for the nave and ordered online no problem after reading the reveiws on tripadvisor.
A fabulous evenings entertainment well worth it.
out of this world, first class musical evening by candlelight
My husband and I went to the Belmont Group Musical evening by candlelight on Saturday last. It was exceptionally good. We were seated at the front, in the Nave, because it was our first time, but to be honest, if you were anywhere it would be excellent. The accoustics are first rate. The Church is so simple and elegant inside. There is an interval where you can go downstairs to the crypt for a drink which we did. There seemed to be excellent food down there so will try it the next time. We had gone to Chandos the pub nearby hoping to get some food but just had drinks. Didnt like the crowd in it at all, so next time will just go to the Crypt. Much nicer. Cant wait to go back for another evening of wonderful music. Truly outstanding.
Try to attend a concert if you can
Try to plan your visit here to coincide with one of their many fantastic concerts. In my experience the performances have always been excellent and its a wonderful way to experience the space.
Nothing intresting on this place...
I've heard that there are great accoustics and festivals are sometimes held here. I think they do a great job with homeless people etc, which is great.
But as a tourist, I can't really understand why is there a husle about this place.
A simple church, nothing to be seen there really. I entered, a couple of old people seemed almost annoyed to see me and stared at me in a rude way, I had a look, and went down to the so called "Crypt". A large area with a shop and a self-service restaurant ( that served great soups I have to add), and a small chapel and offices further downstairs. Nothing else to attract someones eye.
Either I missed something, either it just wasn't the thing for me!
