The best way to see the city, by far!
I live in London but my boyfirend has only moved here recently and I wanted to show him the sights on foot rather than taking the tube between one place and another, most people would be suprised how easy it is to get about without using the underground and how close a proximity most of the sites are within of each other in London. I looked for some free walking guides to download and found London Walks.
We have now done all of the walks listed on their website and they're all great, the directions are really simple to follow and the interesting little facts they put on there are great too, I learnt loads and i've lived here for years!!
A must for visitors to our wonderful city and residents alike, I will be taking any guests we have on these, especially the Royal Walk.
Informative, funny and different
Every time we come to London we took place in a London walk. Out of professional interest we took part in the Inns of Court-Tour, the Hidden London-Tour and the Whitechapel-Tour. We enjoyed it everytime very much and learned a lot about the city and its people. The guides were easy to understand even for a non-native speaker. On our next trip (hopefully December next year) we will definitely go on another tour. With 7 pounds per person the price was very reasonable for a 2 hours tour.
Old Hampstead Village and Famous Square Mile
My husband and I love the London Walks! Try the Famous Square Mile for a wonderful tour of the financial district which is much more interesting than it sounds. You will see the first coffee house in London, learn how Lloyd's of London began, and visit the beautiful building where the Queen still has banquets.
If you want to get out of the city and ramble, take the tube up north and see the famous woods and villageof Hamstead. The Old Hamstead Village tour was my all time favorite. If you can go on a sunny day, all the better! You can go back on your own and bring a picnic lunch and spend hours walking through the extensive heath. The view of the city of London from Parliament Hill is incredible. If you do go to Hampstead, stop at Paul's bakery, just down from the tube. I've sampled at least 8 of the delights in this French bakery and they're all delicious!
Good tours, great value.
Overall London Walks is a must-do when you travel to London. There is no way a new visitor would know a fraction of what the guides do or where to find these things. There is a wide variety of walking tours within the city and day-trips out of the city to choose from, and I am certain that there are several more I will do the next time I travel to the city. During my ten days I was able to take four separate tours:
Westminster by Gaslight (Monday night): Very solid tour that starts in the evening for those whose days are spent at museums and such. We traveled around historic neighborhoods as well as visiting Westminster Abbey and the other side of the Thames where the finer points of Parliament's architecture were described. A BIG bonus of this tour was sittting in on a session of the House of Lords. (4/5)
Legal and Illegal London (Wednesday afternoon): This tour covered central London and focused on legal happenings and things like barristers and solicitors. The tour guide was very knowledgable, however this wasn't an area of interest of mine so my returns were average. People with a law background may find it more interesting. (3/5)
The Blitz (Thursday afternoon): Now this is something I had an interest in and the tour was excellent. A bonus was two people in the group who actually lived through the bombings and were able to tell their stories. We started at St. Paul's Cathedral and ended at a museum with Roman Ruins that were uncovered during the bombing (!). Highly recommended. (5/5)
Jack the Ripper (Sunday evening): A bit overrated in my opinion. There were too many people in the group and I found the subject material a bit average, having read a bit about the Ripper before the visit. (3/5)
The best tourist activity in London, affordable and informative
This is by far, the best recommendation on London what to do. Many things in London are free, but this is one thing that is amazingly affordable and well worth the money. Their website is very informative and has a large variety of types of tours. Their guides are very knowledgable, entertaining and give lots of insight into the local areas of London. I have been on many of these tours and enjoyed every single one. It is always the first thing I recommend for people to do in London. I advise taking one the first or second day of your trip, that way you can fit in more later in your visit!!!!!
