An unexpected gem of a London wine bar, hidden away in Leicester Square, Cork & Bottle boasts up to 40,000 bottles in its cellar reserves at any one time. Established in 1971, the renowned bar lives up to its ethos that "life's too short for boring wines" with a wine list that's individual, diverse and lovingly chosen. Viva Verdi, Bankside

Viva Verdi on Bankside is London's first prosciutto and wine bar, and fiercely proud of its Italian roots. So not only are all the wines imported from Italy, but the cured meats and many other tasty treats are too. Food-wise, it's all about Parma specialities like Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano Reggiano, which you can also take away from the in-house "salumeria" or delicatessen. Our tip? Head over on a Tuesday evening when you can sample freshly prepared nibbles with your wine – for free. Buon Appetito!
Green & Blue, Lordship Lane
The people at Green & Blue are on a mission to get Londoners drinking wine for the pleasure of it. To help you on your way, they host Wine Dinners, a School of Wine and even musical wine tastings. The Lordship Lane-based wine shop, deli and bar (there's another branch in Clapham) has plenty of wines to choose from, or you can order online. In fact, if you email over details of an event you're planning – your budget, what you like to drink and the food you're serving – they'll suggest something for you!
Old Favourite: Gordon's Wine Bar

Established in 1890, Gordon's Wine Bar is a possibly the oldest wine bar in London and one of its best-loved. Originally built as part of the railway engineering works around London Bridge, Wine Wharf was reclaimed in 2000 to form part of Vinopolis – the wine-tasting, restaurant and events complex near Borough Market. There are over 300 wines to choose from, with everything from new world varieties to fine wines. Hungry visitors can snack from the bar menu and food platters, designed to compliment the wines (rather than the other way round), and on Mondays there's live music from the resident jazz band.
