The Old Shades restaurant and pub in London's Trafalgar Square is an old-fashioned proper pub just steps from Trafalgar Square and Charing Cross Station in Whitehall with a very good restaurant attached. Stepping into The Old Shades, you'll feel you've gone back a few decades to the days when pubs were manly spaces with dark wooden panelling, banquette seating or upholstered stools, wildly figured carpeting, fireplace, fierce ancestral portraits, stained glass windows, robust geraniums in the front and an outside shelf to rest your pint on when you stepped out for a fag. The fact that this pub also offers super traditional English menu with a few 20th century additions -- nachos, spicy chicken curry and an array of excellent burgers -- just adds to its excellence. Great ales and wines and a superb Sunday roast complete the picture.
