Gilak

About Gilak

Named after the people of a large Iranian province, the Gilak restaurant on London’s Holloway Road is one of the most authentic Middle Eastern dining experiences in the capital. A spacious, plainly decorated venue with little fuss or fanfare, Gilak very much concentrates on providing sumptuous food and a warm reception. The cuisine, based around the traditional dishes, produce and flavours of the Northern Iranian region of Gilan – which sits on the Caspian Sea - is strong on fish and vegetarian dishes with the unusual local staple of rice served in simple, perfect style. Gilak is an affordable option for exotic, unusual dining in comfortable, friendly surroundings.

The waiter was a little too forceful to get us to get another starter in addition to the one we chose. It was also a little too pricey in total we think as well as £4.60 for a glass of house wine, in Holloway not central London!

We went to Gilak at the top of Holloway Road. Food was fantastic and the waiter (he may have been the owner?) helped us choose a really delicious selection of starters. The house wine was basic but still drinkable. The only thing that could have improved the meal would be if the restaurant was a bit more atmospheric. Overall though, I would definitiely recommend it!

We went to Gilak restaurant in London on Holloway Road near Archway station. The food was great and the service friendly and efficient. There was a nice aambience and the value was excellent. This was our second visit and we would go again. All in all, an enjoyable experience.

Really wanted Gilak to be a good experience, local to us and unusual cuisine. Sadly it didn't live up to expectations. Starters were the best course, making smoked aubergine taste delicious is no mean feat! However, our main courses were bland. One vegetarian option, the other a lamb stew. Both looked and tasted like spinach soup, little flavour, so dull. The merlot we chose had sold out and the desert I wanted was also unavailable. At £30 per head there's far better value nearby.

Met friends for lunch in Gilak in Archway, first time there. Very good food, didn't know what to expect from Persian cuisine, all of us were very pleased wih our choices. Portions were large. Service was friendly and relaxed.
