Ukai

About Ukai

A central London restaurant with an interesting concept, Ukai appeals to a varied crowd, especially to foodies looking for something new. Following on from the success of its sister restaurant in Portobello, Ukai is a Japanese restaurant which offers much more than your average sushi joint. Named after the traditional fishing practice of using cormorants to dive for fish, Ukai combines simple, unfussy modern décor with authentic Japanese cuisine. Offering a wide range of sushi - all fresh and perfectly prepared - this restaurant also offers delicious ramen and salads, all created using traditional Japanese methods of preparation. For Eastern food fans, Ukai is a must.

This was my first visit to Ukai with a friend who is also a sushi-lover. The food was good, but I have some issues with this place. First, the sushi part of the menu is in English *only* (which I've NEVER seen before). When I asked the waitress if the "Shrimp" was the large cooked prawns OR the small sweet shrimp (amaebi) she had no idea. They obviously hired our waitress based purely on her looks. Her English was hilariously bad, and she forgot to do most of what we asked. Sort it out!

Awful service - staff are rude and totally disorganised. 2nd time we've had a bad expereince there. The food saves them, but not sure we'll be back.

Ukai - 58 Poland Street, Soho, London. Lovely restaurant, the food is amazing and they have a great selection. The service is friendly if not a little bit slow, but fine if your not in a hurry. We will be going back again for a nice long dinner. Nice selection of drinks as well.

It was a quiet evening, the eve before NYE... sushi was very standard, nothing to rave about. You could get better quality if you hunted around for a bit. There is a cool little bar upstairs, with an 'alright' DJ.

sushi is great, as always but service pretty bad, have been here a few times and this time the waiting staff were particularly standoffish and slow!
