    Drama Cinema

    17 Feb 2012 to 23 Feb 2012

Episodic look at the life of Cuban poet and novelist, Reinaldo Arenas (1943-1990), from his childhood in Oriente province to his death in New York City. In 1964 he has joined Casto's rebels and meets the wealthy Pepe, a gay lover from this past, who forms part of a love-hate relationship that lasts for years. Reinaldo's openly gay behavior is a subversive and potentially incriminiating way of spiting Castro's government. His writing and homosexuality inevitably get him into trouble, where he spends two years in prison for his love affair with Pepe. During this period, he writes letters for other inmates and smuggles out a novel. He eventually befriends Lázaro Gomes Garriles with whom he lives stateless and in poverty in Manhattan after leaving Cuba in the Mariel boat-lift. When asked why he writes, he replies cheerfully, "Revenge".
