About Four O Nine
Tucked away from Clapham’s bustling high street with only a discreet brass plaque to guide you, Four O Nine restaurant is a hidden gem specialising in simple but sophisticated modern European cuisine. You enter speakeasy style by buzzing the buzzer then make your way up the narrow stairs into a fabulous, Manhattan loft-style space full of bubbling conversation. Always a fab night :)
Having read positive reviews here and in the press about 409, I was looking forward to my visit. But I have to say, the food did not live up to the expectations of any of our party of four. The restaurant is lovely, as are the staff. The service was excellent. However, the food was average and I feel that we could have had better quality for much less cost elsewhere. Dissapointing really.
I went to Four O Nine in Clapham with my partner on Saturday evening. The food was very good and good value for three courses for £24. Wine was a bit expensive (there weren't any cheap options really but I enjoyed it. Lovely, romantic atmosphere and great service. I would recommend it.
A romantic setting, beautiful at night, lit mainly by candles with very little electrical lighting. The service wasn't bad, but we were waiting a while to make our order, then later on service became a little over attentive - I was driving and I had to stop my glass being topped-up 5 times. The food was hit and miss. My starter was bland, the main ingredient of my girlfriend's soup (cauliflower) was over powered by the other flavours, though quite tasty. Mains and sides dishes were accomplished, deserts unimaginative. In summery: a better than average restaurant at a fitting cost. The chef was obviously technically talented, but perhaps was a little over adventurous with some of his flavour combinations. Perhaps the food suffered for being dressed-up as something more complicated than it was.
Four O Nine always delivers. Great atmosphere and great food.
