Toptable says about Benares

Benares is currently closed following a fire and is scheduled to re-open in mid/late November.Atul Kochhar is at the vanguard of the new Indian cuisine. Forget sludgy sauces poured over unrecognizable meat - at this Mayfair Indian restaurant you'll find interesting fresh flavours and subtle spices. British and European ingredients are cleverly mixed with classic Indian items and given an exciting new twist. The décor at Benares is equally striking from its long granite bar to the elegantly lit dining room and pond with floating lilies. A sense of Zen-like calm pervades the restaurant, providing a perfect contrast to the striking flavours and ingredients of the food. This restaurant only takes bookings of up to 8 people.

Lunch at Benares, food was excellent, a unique twist of fusion not the typical indian dishes I was expecting. The combination of indian and european ingredients was pure imagination!

We chose the sampling menu so that we could taste the wide array of food available. All the courses were superbly cooked and presented. Well worth the £69 each we paid for food. Would eat there again without hesitation and recommend it to others as a must do place to eat at. One of the finest restaurants I have eaten at.

It is not our first visit to Benares, and we found as ever the food to be exceptional, beautifully presented, well explained and delicious.

Unfortunately our table was not ready, so we didnt sit until 9.30 (instead of 9) and had to request our order be taken. that aside the service was good, (but I woudnt rate it excellent). the restaurant was also exceptionally noisy, making conversation almost impossible, so not good for a night of catch up with friends. but the finest indian food in london!
