Polly Higgins: Eradicating Ecocide at Royal Society Of Arts
Special Event22 Feb 2012
Barrister and author Polly Higgins represents the biggest client of all - the Earth. She believes Ecocide is the fifth missing 'Crime Against Peace' and proposes that it sit alongside genocide as an international crime around the world. In her new book Eradicating Ecocide, Polly Higgins sets out to demonstrate how our planet is fast being destroyed by the activities of corporations and governments, facilitated by 'compromise' laws that offer insufficient deterrence. She offers a solution that is radical but, she feels, absolutely necessary. The recent Mexican Gulf oil spill is a compelling reminder of the consequences of unchecked ecocide. At the RSA, Polly Higgins demonstrates how the introduction of a new legally binding mechanisms in national and international law would hold to account heads of corporate bodies that are found guilty of acts of long-term severe damage to the environment.
