Toptable says about Shanghai

What a change from your usual local Chinese! Shanghai occupies the listed premises of a former East End pie and mash shop built when Victoria was on the throne, and the atmospheric old shopfront is still here, perfectly preserved. There are marble prep areas, long bar, original floor, oak booths to seat twenty, tiled walls and eel-motifed mirrors. However, the rear of the restaurant is a newly-built modern Chinese eaterie with oriental imagery filled with warm light from the stained glass ceiling windows. The menu is a combination of classic Chinese favourites complemented by Western -influenced versions of Eastern dishes. The absolute must-haves are the pork-filled fried dumpling starter, served with red vinegar and ginger strips, and main course of baked fresh lobster with ginger and spring onions. There are karaoke evenings to liven the place up even more. This is a place for everyone.

We did the £25 three course lunch with champagne at Greenhouse and found the food to be superb quality - it well deserves its michelin star and we left feeling pleasantly full. excellent value for money. i will definitely be back.

The Shanghai is excellent value for money and the dim sum is excellent. There were 12 of us eating and we had the small room at the back all to ourselves. The staff were not very friendly but were quick to take our order and the food came very quickly, although I had to ask four times and it took 20 mins to get the bill. To their credit, they weren't phased by the three year old we had with us running around the restaurant. Recommended for relaxed, no frills dim sum.

We went to Shanghai pre-theatre as an alternative to the Turkish restaurants serving the Arcola theatre. The pie-shop front end is quirky and beautiful. The back was busier, but less characterful. Some of the food - the sizzling quid, prawn and scallops and pak choi with garlic - was very good, but dim sum, slow-cooked pork and duck ranged from average to generically good. The USP of this place for us is the pie shop decor. Good food might go back to try to find the wow gastro factor...

Shanghai: Really great food, fab prawn toast and good wine list, lovely atmosphere where you feel like you've got your own space even though it's busy. You can also book for 15 to have a meal and karaoke. As it's local it will definitely be somewhere i'll haunt regularly!
