Royal Mews

One of the finest working stables in existence, the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace is home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages. The most dazzling of all the coaches on display is the Gold State Coach, used as part of the Golden Jubilee celebrations in 2002.

Lonely Planet review of Royal Mews

Reviewed by: Lonely Planet

South of the palace, the Royal Mews started life as a falconry but is now a working stable looking after the royals' immaculately groomed horses, along with the opulent vehicles the monarchy uses for getting from A to B. Highlights include the stunning gold coach of 1762, which has been used for every coronation since that of George III, and the Glass Coach of 1910, used for royal weddings. The Mews is closed in June during the four-day racing carnival of Royal Ascot, when the royal heads try to win a few bob on the gee-gees.

We just happened to stumble upon this sight and it turned out to be one of my favorite memories in London. The Royal Mews are the royal horse stables for Buckingham Palace. It is located behind the palace and is a nice thing to see after viewing the changing of the guard. You get to see the horses (unless they are out being exercised) in their stalls- they are gorgeous Grey Windsors. You can also see the carriages used for weddings (ie the carriage that Diana Spencer rode in to St. Paul's) and coronations. They also have one of the Queen's Phantom Rolls Royce cars on display. This tour was very interesting to me because it was a refreshing break from viewing items from centuries ago. These horses, carriages and cars are in use today which made it interesting. It was like exploring through the Queen's garage! I highly recommend this especially if you like horses.

Being near Buckingham, why not go?

The Royal Mews was kind of interesting, but a little disappointing. We were told it would take approximately an hour, but it only took us about 15 minutes to look through everything, (granted, we didn't take the guided tour.) Maybe we just weren't all that interested in carriages.

All of the Royal Coaches are kept here. I did not realize that the crown has its own coach. The Coronation Coach is unbelievable. This is truly a work of art. The combination of artwork, carvings and the gilding is a wonderful combination.

This is only a few minutes walk from Buckingham Palace and well worth it.
