Toptable says about The Modern Pantry

Housed in two elegant Georgian buildings in St John's Square, The Modern Pantry has become a firm favourite with Clerkenwell's fashionable foodies and local City types. The relaxed all-day dining experience was created by Anna Hansen, who found fame working at The Providores with Peter Gordon, so it's no surprise to find an innovative international menu and global wine list on offer here. The ground floor café is a bright and modern space – ideal for breakfast or brunch; while the stylish upstairs restaurant is divided into two airy and contemporary dining rooms overlooking the square. Popular dishes include the grilled miso-marinated onglette steak with cassava chips; Chermoula baked sea bass with quinoa; and the unique and delicious kaffir lime meringue with vanilla mascarpone.

the food at the modern pantry was excellent with great choice. Not sure if it was the time of booking (2pm) but we had very slow service as not enough staff which was dissapointing for the occasion. would go again with a TT deal.

the modern pantry has amazing food and excellent service. From the times we have eaten there i think i prefer eating downstairs for better vibe, bit quieter upstairs so more for a formal meal.

I have now eaten at The Modern Pantry on about 6 different occasions and have had excellent food everytime. Occasionally the service can be a little less than perfect but the food always makes up for this. The first floor dining room with its grey panelled walls and plain floor boards is lovely and usually quieter than the ground floor. I'll keep going back.

We enjoyed the food at The Modern Pantry and will go again. It probably does not matter what a cuisine is called if the cooking is good, the combination of tastes works, and there is something new for the jaded palate. Service was friendly and informal but attentive. Not sue about the decor and bare boards but my wobbly chair and table were quickly attended to.

The Modern Pantry proved a great location and menu for a casual dinner with good food, ideal service and not too much pompus fuss and detail. Interesting menu, very difficult to choose as it all is so good! The highlights apart from (I think Lisa) the waitress, was the wine list! when asking her opinion, here eyes lit up for one of our choices and an amazing wine was presented. Great variety of wines from £20-£30, which for me is target dinner wine price. Well done. Don't read this anymore - Go!
